Day Trip to Marathon_12th December 2015

PsinakisThe Consular Corps in Greece organized another successful event upon the invitation by the Mayor of Marathon Mr. Ilias Psinakis.

The event was an one-day trip to the historical and picturesque city close to Athens.

Ambassadors, Career and Honorary Consuls from 29 Embassies and Consulates attented the event.

Vice-Mayor of Marathon, Archaeologist Mrs Rizos served as the perfect host as she welcomed the visiting group at the starting point of the Marathon race.

Form here she gave a tourm explaining important information about the history of the place which has long been a source of inspiration for many.

Then the participants went to the archaeological site of the Marathon Tomb, on Marathon plain, traditionally known as "The Pile" where the site Archaeologist explained in detail all the facts concerning the Marathon Battle which took place in 490 B.C.

The guided tour continued on to the Archaeological Museum of Marathon, where the Mayor Ilias Psinakis welcomed the members of the Consular Corps in Greece.

In a very warm ceremony, the President of the Consular Corps in Greece, Captain Nikolaos Soutos , in greeting Mayor Psinakis, expressed his gratitude and presented him with a commemorative plaque to remember te event. THe Mayor expressed is happiness and satisfaction over the fact that so many foreign representatives had chosen to visit, asking them to further strengthen cultural links between their countries and Marathon.

Whilst in the Museum, the visitors also tool the opportunity to examine important sculptures , antique vases, weapons and many other items excavated near the site were the historical battle took place.

Before leaving Marathon, the group went on to a local fish tavern where they tasted an array of fresh fish and seafood accompanied by excellent lical wine.

A memorable excursion was completed with very encouraging comments from all participants.

This proved to be a prerfect event to close 2015 as CCG looks forward to an exciting and interesting calendar of events for 2016.
